1.Introduce yourself and your chosen driver of change and design lens.

P1. This is LJ, and my chosen driver of change is ‘Up-cycling’, at the same time I decided to choose ‘The camera as archive machine’ to be my design lens. ‘Up-cycling’ is the direction that I am interested in, I think this is a very challenging study.

2.Explain why you chose your driver of change.

​

P2. When I saw the word of ‘Up-cycling’, the first thing that came to my mind was that it will be extremely creative and designed, the things like that are very attractive to me, and creativity and design are closely related to my major that I am studying now.

​

3.Explain why you chose your design lens.

​

P3. The reason to use camera as archive machine to be my design lens is I think it’s intuitionistic and visualised, it provides a detailed and intuitive record and presentation of my research process and the details of the subject.

​

4.Explain your understanding of your driver of change.

​

P4. My understanding of it is using something in a new way without doing anything to reprocess, you could Upcycle anything, such as wine bottles, cans, newspapers, suitcases, jeans, etc. You name it. If you no longer have a use for it, up cycle it.

​

P5. Upcycling is different from recycling, recycling takes consumer materials and break them down so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality. When you Upcycling an item, you aren’t breaking down the materials. You may be refashion it.

​

P6. This is my secondary mind map, after doing that I think out and forces on some insights: such as Remaking the way we made things; To give new value for junks; Creative reuse.

5.Present interesting and relevant examples of projects and research related to your driver.

​

P7. This is an Upcycling example, in this case, the boxes that lay up and sell eggs in the supermarket has been transformed into a lamp, and we could recall now how many of these boxes we have lost in our daily lives.

​

P8. The Next case is to use some old and broken rain boots to make flowerpots, which is a very special decoration in the garden. The growing up children can no longer wear in the smaller rain boots with new value.

​

P9. In this case, it is using an unused plastic bottle to hand-make a practical and novel broom, it is very practical and cheap, and interesting.

​

P10. These are some of the bottle caps with pictures inside, it is good use of resources and full of artistry and fear of appreciation.

​

P11. The case is a display of artwork made of some old light bulbs, with a combination of water and flowers to give a another unique value to the old light bulbs.

​

P12. This is a pen case made of lens from a wasted camera.

​

P13. This is a collection of disposable plastic spoons, which are beautifully displayed in the room.

​

6.Explain your understanding of your design lens.

​

P14. My understanding the design lens of ‘The camera as archive machine’ is to use pictures to tell a story or show the concepts that I want to convey. Pictures could help me express my ideas in an intuitive way, and what I need to do is to give them a unique visual language for the pictures I will use.

7.Present interesting examples of your projects using your chosen lens that you have found via research.

​

From my point of view, most of theme photography exhibition could be regarded as a way of conveying story or emotion to the viewer with pictures. Photography is not only a recording tool but also a way of communication.

8.Summarise your presentation and what you will do next.

​

Next, I will do some experiments, such as I collect some junk from my life, use them to make some Upcyching items, and use camera recording them. At the same time, I will further study and the meaning and value of Upcycling. Thank you!
